Jobs in the Beauty Industry (No License Required)
You’ve decided that you want to pursue your passion for beauty and cosmetics. The problem is…you don’t know where to start or where you fit in.
This can be challenging at first because the beauty industry is sooooo broad, but don’t stress. I’ve got a couple of places you can start that you might haven’t thought about and you DON’T need a cosmetology or esthetician license to do.
1. Ulta Beauty
Ulta has always been and will always my first love. It was the first job I ever had. If you’re looking for a place to start learning about different cosmetic brands, Ulta is definitely a great place to start! Ulta sells drugstore and high-end brands of makeup and skincare. Working at Ulta is basically a regular retail position unless you become a specialty advisor for a specific brand, such as Clinique, Lancome or MAC. A beauty advisor position here would consist of running the register, handling returns, markdowns, and putting away shipment.
2. Department Store (Belk, Dillard’s or Macy’s)
Check out the cosmetic departments at your local department store. See which makeup counters they have and research the brands, even the ones that you’ve never used before. Reading up on the brands will help you decide which brand you may be a good fit for! Most cosmetic counter positions are less retail and more SALES GOALS. If you’ve got the gift of gab and are good at demonstrating products, a department store cosmetic counter would DEFINITELY be an awesome route to go!
3. Sally Beauty
Sally Beauty is home every hair product you could possibly ever need. From shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, stylers and hairsprays, Sally Beauty has everything a hair stylist would need to do hair in a salon. HOWEVER, you DON’T need to be a hair stylist to get a job here! Sally Beauty is classified as a RETAIL job. Soooo, all you would need to work here is great customer service and a winning smile! If you’re interested in hair care and cosmetology, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start to see if it’s an industry you can see yourself working in long-term. Working at Sally Beauty would also be a GREAT WAY to LEARN about different hair products as well as a few cosmetic brands.
I hope these 3 suggestions give you a head start in the beauty industry!
